Product Profitability Calculator

The product with the best margin is rarely the one that brings in the most money. Rank your catalogue by what each product actually contributes and find the ones sold at a loss.

How this was worked out

    The formula

contribution = (price − cost) × units sold

    What it means

Ranking by percentage margin rewards the expensive product that barely sells. What pays the bills is total contribution, which multiplies each unit's margin by the units actually sold. A product on 75% margin selling five units contributes less than one on 20% selling a thousand.

How to work it out by hand

    1. Subtract cost from price for each product: that is its unit margin
    2. Multiply by the units sold: that is its contribution
    3. Add the contributions for the total
    4. Sort from highest to lowest and look at each one's share

    What is worth knowing

Typically a handful of products carry most of the margin, and that list is the one worth keeping in mind when deciding what to promote, what to renegotiate with the supplier and what to drop. Watch the negative-margin products: sometimes they are there on purpose, as a draw to sell something else, and sometimes they have been losing money for months because a cost went up and nobody revisited the price.

    Frequently asked questions

Why not rank by percentage margin?

Because a percentage does not say how much money comes in. 75% on five sales contributes less than 20% on a thousand.

    What is contribution?

Unit margin times units sold: what that product contributes towards covering fixed costs and leaving a profit.

Should I drop the products that lose money?

Not necessarily. Some are loss leaders that bring sales of other things; what matters is that it is a decision and not an oversight.

How do I write the list?

One product per semicolon, with name, price, cost and units separated by commas.
