The formula
attendance = classes attended ÷ total classes × 100
Where it comes from
The calculation is simple, but the margin is worth looking at from the side of the classes required rather than the absences allowed: on a minimum of 80 % over 60 classes you have to attend 48, so you can miss 12.
How to work it out by hand
- Divide the classes you have attended by the total
- Multiply by 100
- Work out the minimum classes required and subtract from the total to see how many you can miss
What is worth knowing
The usual minimum sits between 75 % and 85 % depending on the institution, and in many cases authorised absences still count towards the total even where they carry no disciplinary consequence. It is worth checking the specific rules: in some places the percentage is worked out per course and in others across the total hours of the year.
